Ranking

How ranking factors determine standings and pairing order across rounds.

Ranking in Combat Command determines both pairing order and overall standings. It is driven by ranking factors: Game-system-specific values computed from match results and any score adjustments applied by the TO.

Ranking Factors

Ranking factors work in a cascading tie-breaker fashion: If two competitors are tied on the first factor, the second is compared, then the third, and so on. The TO can choose which factors to use and in what order.

Each game system has its own set of ranking factors based on how that system records match results. Different game systems might use different definitions of a “point” or measure destruction of armies by different means (e.g. number of units destroyed vs. percentage-based damage).

Example Tournament Set-Up

For example, a TO may choose to use the following ranking factors:

  1. Total Wins
  2. Total Points
  3. Total Units Destroyed

These values are computed for every competitor. If two competitors have the same number of Total Wins, their Total Points are compared as a tie breaker. If their Total Points are also equal, their Total Units Destroyed are compared, and so on.

A tournament can have as many ranking factors as the selected game system provides, however 3 is typically the sweet spot.

Advanced Ranking Factors

TOs are encouraged to keep their scoring simple and straight-forward, sticking to the various total values their players accumulate. However, some tournaments may need more complex ranking factors. For this reason, each “total” factor is also crunched into three additional ranking factors, which can be used to create complex strength-of-schedule rankings:

  1. Total [Stat]
  2. Average [Stat] - Own total, divided by the number of games/rounds played.
  3. Opponent Total [Stat] - All opponents’ totals against other players.
  4. Opponent Average [Stat] - All opponents’ totals against other players, divided by the number of games/rounds played.

Score Adjustments

The values for ranking factors are mainly driven by the match result data submitted by players, however they can also be affected by the TO applying Score Adjustments. These can be bonuses, for example for on-time list submission, or penalties levied for various reasons (cheating, slow play, etc.). The value of a score adjustment also has a unit: One of the tournament’s selected ranking factors. You can only apply score adjustments to the in-use ranking factors. This is because applying a penalty of, say, “-1 units destroyed” has no effect if “units destroyed” is not used for ranking.

Game System Ranking Factors

Each game system has a different set of ranking factors which can be used. The base versions (simple totals, see Advanced Ranking Factors) for each system are listed below:

Battlefront Systems (Flames of War 4th Ed., Team Yankee 2nd Ed., etc.)

  • Total Wins
  • Total Points (also known as victory points or Battlefront points)
  • Total Units Destroyed
  • Total Units Lost
